Every company needs to have a security policy in place to keep its employees, equipment and goods safe. The right security measures can help deter burglars or prevent unwanted visitors from entering business premises without permission. Security is something to always be concerned about, so take the time to carry out some security checks.

Here are 10 workplace security tips to help you better manage the security of your business premises:

1. Check that all windows and doors are securely locked before leaving and closing the workplace. In the morning, check them again and see if anything is missing.

2. Keep all entrances and exits secure at all times. A combination lock is ideal for controlling access to a building, as a code is needed to gain entry. Another option would be to issue cards, keys or ID-badges to regular staff. A door access kit is another means of controlling access. With a choice of access kits, you can choose the right kit for the correct purpose. In this way, anyone without access needs to first go to reception to sign in and be provided with a visitors badge.

3. Make sure you have a good security system. Preferably one that alerts the police or local authorities in event of a break in. Only give the password/code to staff who have legitimate reasons for having it and change it regularly.

4. If you don’t already have it, now might be a good time to install video systems or CCTV at the entrances and exits of your building, as well as hallways, stairwells and places where financial transactions take place.

5. Along with your building, it is vital to secure your car park or parking area. This is another step in maintaining high workplace security. Here, Dummy CCTV Cameras and Car Park Barriers such as Swing Gates, Bollards & Posts, as well as Automatic Barriers, are excellent deterrence to unwanted criminal activity.

6. If your workplace parking area is accessible to visitors, double-check that your car doors and windows are closed and locked. Burglars will be tempted to test car doors to see if they are unlocked even in the day.

7. Sufficient lighting in and around your workplace is another great deterrent to unwanted. Effective lighting does not only discourage break-ins, but also provides security and peace of mind for employees who arrive early or leave late when it is already dark.

8. The investment into technological assets in the workplace can be staggering. This is why we need to ensure the safety of our assets such as expensive laptops and computers security. It is, however, not only the financial risk you need to worry about, but the loss of important, sometimes personal and confidential information stored on them. Security cables, security shoes and slippers (a.k.a clamps), are an inexpensive and discreet means of preventing the theft of laptops and computers.

9. Accessing computers and laptops could be very easy for anyone if they are not password protected. Whatever business you are in, keeping documents and personal information safe is vital. So keep your computer and documents safely locked away behind a strong password.

10. The knowledge that your employees are familiar with and understand your workplace security measures will put your mind at ease. It is therefore essential to not only set up a workplace security policy, but moreover, effectively communicate it to your workforce. It is your responsibility to educate them as to what the policy is as well as who they may need to go to if they have any questions or doubts about a security procedure. In this manner, when a security procedure is carried out, it is done correctly and the member of staff can feel safe about it.
